Teeth (and Health) Tips with Dr T No 4

The Best Thing You’ve never heard of

I’m going to take a stab in the dark here and say the healthiest food you’ve never heard of (or tried) is AMLA, also known as Indian Gooseberry. Revered in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years, AMLA has caught the eye of researchers in recent years, and with good reason. In a study of the total antioxidant content of 3100 foods, beverages, spices, herbs and supplements, AMLA came out the winner; and not by a small margin. What’s all that antioxidant power good for? Lots it seems. Do you think cancer is a problem? AMLA has been called (in a serious peer reviewed journal) “A wonder berry in the treatment and prevention of cancer”. That was enough to turn me into a user, but there are other benefits too.

This study of the effect of AMLA powder on the blood sugar and cholesterol levels of healthy and diabetic subjects is a real eye opener. Just a ½ teaspoon of AMLA powder a day can drop the blood sugar levels of diabetic patients down to normal levels in 3 weeks. What’s it do to cholesterol though? Well, in diabetic AND healthy patients, a ½ teaspoon of AMLA powder a day dropped bad (LDL) cholesterol by almost 50% in just 3 weeks! And in this study AMLA use also produced a 50% drop in C-reactive protein (an inflammation marker). And in this study AMLA was almost as effective as Aspirin and Plavix in thinning blood in patients at risk of a heart attack. That’s one little berry a day (and ½ a teaspoon is about one berry) holding its own against some of the most prescribed drugs in the world. To have all of this information summed up in videos just click hereherehere and here.

Remember I’m not a real doctor, so don’t do anything stupid like stopping prescribed medications without consulting your real doctor. A smart move, however, might be to start taking ½ a teaspoon of AMLA powder a day so you NEVER NEED to take a bunch of drugs in the first place.

What’s This Got to Do with Teeth?

I know I’m pushing the bounds of believability here, but not only can AMLA save your life; it can save your teeth too. AMLA can suppress the plaque forming ability of oral bacteria. It hasn’t been tested on humans, but given you’re supposed to swallow it anyway, putting your ½ teaspoon in a glass of water and swishing it around your mouth first can’t do any harm, and may do a bit of good. More on AMLA and mouth rinses in our next tip.
